Rose Cottage

Rose Cottage
"Rose Cottage was a small, but cozy house. The yellow walls had rose vines scattered all over it, almost reaching the chimney. But it was winter now, and the vines were dead and brown. But the house still looked pretty. The two upstairs windows, facing the east, were the rooms of Sara Stanley and Aunt Hetty. Olivia's room was faced westward. All the windows in the little house had lace curtains, and they were ruffled to perfection. Downstairs, in the peach, pink and white striped hallway, Olivia King was standing in front of the hall mirror, placing on her rabbit fur hat, while Sara stood on the curving steps watching her aunt get bundled up for a wintry walk with Jasper Dale. Wilst all this was happening in the hallway, Hetty King blacked the stove in the warm, yellow walled and green doored kitchen. The ladies improvement society was coming today and she had to have everything in order. The upstairs she had cleaned the day before, and that morning Hetty had cleaned the parlor. Hetty's parlor was a beautiful place to sit and have a cup of tea. The dark green walls, the lace curtains, the bookshelf in the wall, filled with a variety of books, the red satin sofas, the polished dark wood tables, the marvelous fireplace and the elegant piano, made Hetty feel satisfied and proud. Her parlor was always so clean and fresh and sparkling, and as for the rest of the house, well, that too, but it didn't quite reach the elegance of her parlor. Yes, she had to admit, her parlor was a pretty one. But the kitchen was nice too. The yellow rosebud wallpaper and the green trims made the place look cozy, especially in the wintertime. Hot cocoa cups everywhere, mittens and socks all over the stove, hardly any space left for cooking! Olivia occasionally made her scrumptious pumpkin spice pie, and the aroma filled the whole house! And there were herbs strung here and there, it smelled and looked wonderful. Upstairs, Sara was always in her room writing, reading, acting or doing something at her fullest imagination. Sara's room used to be her mothers room, the wallpaper was a dark green with white and red flowers on it. The bed was large, and over it was her mothers flower patterned blanket, and at the foot end lay her Aunt Hetty's white crocheted afghan. All Sara's furniture was light oak colored, and her dresser held all her prized possessions. Olivia's room was small, but quaint. The wallpaper was grey with white flowers on it. Her brass bed was next to the window, with a plump dark green blanket over it.  Olivia had a small desk underneath the window, and the desk had scratches and ink blots all over it. Papers and books always covered it, Olivia was a journalist, her imagination came from somewhere, which happend to be her special little desk. Hetty's room was at the end of the dark green hallway, her room was a red, dark blue and brown striped wallpaper. Her bed was narrow, much like Hetty herself. Next to the bed she had a little nightstand, on it she had her lamp and a few books. The attic was a regular old attic, with junk here and there, wallpaper peeling off, spider webs, dust, and mice scampering around. But the cellar was nothing like it. The clay floors and walls, and apples, pumpkins, onions, corn, beets, dried berries, canned goods, everything a cellar needed, it was there.  Rose Cottage was a lovely, cozy home. And outside the snow sparkled, making the house look even more snug."
