"Never, let your children get bored. It makes them cranky, grumpy, and much worse- idle, or lazy. Every child must have some chore. It can be anything, like ironing or cleaning for an example. They can black the stove, feed the chickens, milk the cows, clean the stalls, scrub the floor, weed the garden, or dust the house. But, every positive thing has a downside. If you give your children too much to do, they don't have any time for anything else for their pleasure, like fishing or playing in the barn. Give them some regular routines in the morning, afternoon or evening. Preferably mornings and evenings. One thing that never changes, and we see it alot in today's society, children and teens who don't want to work, they just sit idly in front of a large picture tube, and it's destroying them what comes in front of their faces. It is our job to change all that, and to make our children good hard workers. Don't allow your kids to whine when they have to do something, and then give in to what they want. They will cry next time and they will do the same thing over and over again until they get what they want. That happens way too often, however, we are putting a stop to it. And that's what you should do.

"A woman's hair is her crowning glory. We have all heard it said, and it is true. We must all take care of our hair, for it is our crown, because we don't want to be bald! Washing our hair is very important, we don't want it to look like duck grease, now do we? Wash your hair thoroughly with Rolling Reliable's official Hair Wash Shampoo. How to stop children's quarrelling

"Every child argues. It's a fact that will always remain true. Nevertheless, we, as mothers, aunts, teachers and guardians, want to stop fights before it breaks the relationship between children. Some kids squabble over anything, or everything, and sometimes they will not talk to each other for days. Here is some advice for arguing children. Find the trouble maker, as in the photograph shown it is Felicity, and stop the children from ramming into each other, as that can hurt and cause nosebleeds. Let the victim explain the cause of the argument. Arguments are mostly simple and silly really, they just need to kiss and make up. If they cannot get along with chores or any other thing together, do not separate them, it will only make matters worse. The trick is, have them do things together, their relationship will be restored if you keep this habit up. Not that hard to do, is it?  Don't give up on your children, although they may be a handful at times, and they most certainly will be."

"Wear a hat that suits your outfit, and one that you like. If you are wearing a puffy sleeved blouse, and a poofy skirt, wear a smaller hat than in the photograph shown. You don't want to look, well, rather fat. Thus, if you wear a slim outfit, it looks a lot more attractive if you wear a larger, feathery hat. You don't want to look too scrawny either. For simple, more casual outfits, wear a straw hat with a colorful ribbon around it. Just the touch for a simple, but elegant day!"

"Every girl should have the right to look just as pretty in pink as her older sister did. Let the child pick out her own dress for a change, she is growing up you know. Of course, every mother wants her child to look cute and sweet and " Oh, what a pretty little thing!" And, you don't want the child to choose an ugly, horrid dress, either. In the child's point of view, if the mother chooses the clothing, she will feel babyish and will dislike the clothes bought for her. I am certain that you, dear reader, have been in that situation more than twice. Don't let your child go through the same things you have!"

"Every pupil of mine comes to school with clean clothes. Some of them may be in rags, but I make sure that they are clean rags. The lads wear usually a brown, blue, red, grey, or dark green clothes. (Or whatever they find handy in their closet that morning. Typical.)  And they always wear a cap, with a button on top, on their heads. Sundays they wear a suit with bow tie. But when it comes to chore time, they are in coveralls and they are as dirty and sloppy as can be! But, as they say, boys will be boys!" And that, will never change, no matter how hard you try to keep them neat! :}"

In Avonlea, winter is always full of activities. Skating is a major part in the communities society. Ice skating is more for the women and young ladies, but ice hockey is always for the men and older boys. "There's major difference between ice skating and ice hockey." says Avonlea Avengers coach, Archie Gillis. Of course the men take it very seriously. Typical.

Felicity King on the King Pond

The whole community each year has a small country gathering called The Winter Festival. Children
await with anticipation for this upcoming event. Friends and neighbors go to the King Pond and take along delicious delicacies to share. (sort of like a potluck to us:) Music is cranked on and
everyone goes on for a skate, or whirl.

When all the fun is over, the King children and Sara Stanley go for a nice, calm and relaxing skate over the frozen pond, an activity they enjoy after chores.
But, usually it's just Felicity King and her cousin Sara whirling on the ice, until the boys come over for their hockey try-outs, then the girls can sit back and enjoy a "hockey match".

Wally Higgins & Hetty King

Skating can also be a "life changing" experience, especially for Hetty King, who, almost got engaged, to, guess who, a skates sales man, named Wally Higgins. In the episode the calamitous courting of Hetty King, Hetty meets this skates salesman, and sparks fly as Wally and Hetty see each other. But, Hetty just considers him as a friend, and poor Mr. Higgins sees it the other way around, causing hilarious, but also, sort of sad, moments.

Poor Felix.

                                                                "Teaching school is not an easy task. Children never sit quietly in their seats unless told to do so, which, is needed to  be said at least thirty times. Have a set of classroom rules. Here is just a few of my many: Students must not daydream, they mustn't chew their hair, nor throw paper balls at each other. (I just listed a few major rules. You must have your own, I am not your personal tutor, mind you. I'm just giving helpful advice. And that is all.) Always keep this on top of your mind- you are the boss. Not the other way around, which, for some teachers, it is.Your students must mind you, serious consequences will arise if they "take over" your role.  Scare your students a bit. Not literally scarifying them, but, just something that puts them, in their minds, to shame. I have, for instance, a cone shaped hat, called the dunce cap. I have it in full view, where each and every student can see it. It's used for a student that misbehaves, or if he\she does poorly in his\her studies. That studying problem is usually a "curable" issue. The student does not do his homework or does not study like he should, thus causing poor results. Have the student wear the cap for the entire morning, or afternoon. Do not let him wear it the entire day or else it effects his brain. With recess, do not have too many rules, and let them have 15 minutes of play time, exactly."


   
                           

Aunt Abigail's chocolate cake

It was crisp and chilly outside, and Abigail Ward had nothing to do. In fact, she was getting bored of having nothing to do. She cleaned the parlor that morning, swept the kitchen floor, blacked the stove and dusted the upstairs bedrooms.....but now, now she has nothing on her little list of things to do! Well, except for sweeping the porch outside, but that is of no use since the wind would scatter leaves all over it again. She sighed a deep sigh. "Oh!" she groaned in exasperation. "What am I going to do?" Then, a thought popped in her head! Grandmothers chocolate cake. Yes that is exactly it! She will bake a chocolate cake, and stop by her sister, Janet King. Abigail went into the kitchen and bustled around, and her boredom drained away.

Aunt Abigail's chocolate cake

1 cup butter                            2 tsp. baking powder
1 cup brown sugar                              2 tsp. vanilla
4 beaten eggs                          1/2 cup cocoa
2 cups whole grain flour        1/2 cup boiling water
pinch of salt


Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease 8X8 pan. Cream butter, brown sugar, eggs and vanilla. Combine flour, salt and baking powder, cocoa and boiling water. Mix until all lumps are gone. Bake until fork comes out clean, or 30 minutes. Let cool. Add icing if desired.

*An easier way of explaining things: Mix all until combined. Bake. Cool. Eat. :)
